NEWS & KAT-TUN talked about loosing members
May 21, 2014, NHK aired an episode of "The Shounen Club Premium", which is hosted by KAT-TUN. During this episode, NEWS came for the Premium History segment. They talked about how close their debut were, about senpai-kohai relationship and about loosing members from each group.
The debut day for both groups weren't so much apart and their ages are also pretty close. In regard of debuting, NEWS debuted first, but for NEWS' Koyama Keiichiro all of KAT-TUN are actually the senpais in regard of experiences. NEWS' Masuda Takahisa actually had his audition on the same day as KAT-TUN's Nakamaru Yuichi and Kamenashi Kazuya. Kamenashi also stated, that Masuda and himself used to take the same train, the Yamanote Line.
NEWS' Tegoshi Yuya was the last among them to enter Johnny's. Kamenashi asked whether KAT-TUN was already formed by then. Tegoshi said, "When NEWS actually debuted, I was in Johnny's for just 10 months, so of course KAT-TUN was already there." He was so new in Johnny's, that the KAT-TUN members were asking what kind of guy Tegoshi is, when they heared about NEWS. KAT-TUN's Ueada Tatsuya: "We met him for the first time after he got into NEWS." Masuda quickly stated, that it was like that for them too. Tegoshi recounted, that dusing the photo shooting for the cover of their CD, he was asked by ex-NEWS member Nishikido Ryo: "Who are you?" "He was blond and had his hair styled back, he was scary! And he used Kansai-ben!"
In NEWS Tegoshi is the youngest and Koyama the oldest. Masuda introduced their age, Koyama 30, Tegoshi 26, himself 27 and Kato Shigeaki 50. Kato of course quickly corrected him, saying he is 26, the same age as Tegoshi. Nakamaru then asked how they call each other, whether they still use '-kun'. Tegoshi and Kato answered with a no and Masuda explained, that though he is 4 years more senior than Tegoshi, when they first met, Tegoshi already called him Massu. KAT-TUN's Taguchi Junnosuke asked, "How was it when you changed from Keigo to casual language?" Masuda said that there was no such a period between Tegoshi and Kato. Kato told them, that during a VTR, where he himself wasn't in it, although Tegoshi should have called him Kato-kun, he casually used Shige. Tegoshi named Kis-My-Ft2's Tamamori Yuta and Hey! Say! JUMP's Yaotome Hikaru as those, who entered Johnny's around the same time as himself. Hey! Say! JUMP's Yabu Kota is actually his senpai, which made Kamenashi and the others kind of laugh.
As for Koyama, Kamenashi wondered, that at some point he was like part of KAT-TUN. Koyama told them, that Johnny-san had told him that he was part of KAT-TUN. So there were times when he worked in the group, he even raised his hand when KAT-TUN were introduced at the finals. It was at the time, when he had just joined Johnny's and still couldn't dance, so because Taguchi lived near by, Taguchi would come over and the practiced together on the veranda. They even filmed their practice. Their positions were actually mirror-inverted. Kamenashi said, that when he was called for NHK's Pop Jam Koyama wasn't there. Koyama then replied, "I got a phone call from Johnny-san, who said, 'You, after all you're not a KAT-TUN.'"
They then watched the Premium History video. It was cuttings from Johnny's talents appearance on NHK in 2003. Beside NEWS and KAT-TUN, other Johnny's were also featured. The two from KinKi Kids were still 24 years old, when they came as guests on "The Shounen Club". Ikuta Toma interviewed Arashi, who kept joking around. A scene of TOKIO's Matsuoka Masahiro acting in a taiga drama was also shown.
Taguchi asked wether NEWS frequently go out to have meals together as a group. Koyama answered, that fome time to time, when their schedules matched, the do go together. "Like when we need to talk with each other." Kato gave the question back at KAT-TUN. According to them, KAT-TUN became able to go together quite a lot. When they debuted, it wasn't like that. Nakamaru said, that it's bad if they don't communicate at fixed intervals.
After NEWS became a 4 membered group, Koyama thought, that he had to do something, so he wanted to be the leader. At first Koyama and Kato talked about it, later they came and presented it to Masuda and Tegoshi. The 2 of them didn't feel the need of having a leader, "It's fine if we're all equals." But apparently Koyama talked about it quite often, saying he wanted to cherish and lead them and unify them. At that time, they were eating out, so they said, "Well then, if you take care of today's bill then it's OK." Koyama added, "I treated them at a quite good yakiniku restaurant, so it was entertainment business ." He than asked KAT-TUN, how NEWS looked like, when the members started decrasing.
KAT-TUN also lost some members, so he asked the same. For Koyama it was surprising, but on the contrary it seemed manly. "After all it gets like 'let's do it!' I could really empathize." Both group can understand each others situation and had the feeling, that there's no other way than continue. The variation of their song changes and the singing parts increased. Both group are amazed, that they went through the same situation around the same time, when they are actually from the same generation.
